Our Story

Once upon a time in 2017 at the “old” Radio Room in Greenville a band called Silvermane with a bass player named Elliot played a show. Kenzie was in town visiting from Charleston and was in attendance. After the show she ran into Elliot at the bar they talked briefly.

A few months later in Charleston at The Royal American Silvermane played Real South Rex Fest and Kenzie happened to be there again. This time Elliot and Kenzie spent more time together and even had their first kiss by the railroad tracks behind the Royal American.

Elliot and Kenzie stayed in touch, he moved from Greenville to Asheville at the end of 2017 and got his Realtor’s license. Kenzie was still living in Charleston and started working at the record label Silvermane was on, Real South Records, doing marketing and graphic design.

At the end of 2018 Elliot and Kenzie began talking all the time with many late night phone calls lasting hours. On March 22, 2019 Elliot’s band Her Pilots played at The Art Bar in Columbia, SC. Kenzie drove from Charleston to the show to see Elliot’s new band for the first time. Even though it was probably the lowest attended show to date, she had a great time.

After the show, Elliot drove back to Charleston to stay with Kenzie for the weekend. He hung out at AC’s and played pool while she worked as a bouncer, they went to Hampton Park and set up a hammock after having lunch at Moe’s Crosstown, and Kenzie took Elliot to her favorite spot on Folly Beach by the lighthouse.

This was the first of many trips they each made to visit each other taking turns driving the 4 hours between Asheville and Charleston. After almost a year of long distance they both decided they wanted to live together in the same city. Since Elliot’s job at Earthy was going well at the time they decided on Asheville. Kenzie found an apartment on Lexington Ave (behind the Orange Peel) and they signed a lease in February of 2020.

As Kenzie was driving up from Charleston to move into their new apartment together on March 1, 2020 she was talking to her mom who was concerned about a new virus in China. A few weeks later it became clear how serious Covid was after they attended Silversun Pickups, the last show at The Orange Peel before it shut down. With limited job options, Kenzie began working as an in store shopper at Whole Foods and running Earthy’s social media.

The timing of their move and being thrown into the pandemic together was almost a blessing. Having each other for support and being able to spend time together cooking, decorating, buying plants, and building legos brought them even closer.

As the world slowly opened back up in beginning of 2021, Elliot and Jared decided to start their own business and Covert was founded. Kenzie quit Whole Foods and began doing graphic design and marketing for Covert and then started working at The Orange Peel and Rabbit Rabbit.

For Elliot’s birthday in November 2022 they booked a pet friendly hotel for a long weekend in Highlands, NC. After a long and rainy car ride with Banksy they pulled up to the hotel and got settled in. It was rainy, chilly, and very dreary. After a quick walk with Banksy down Main St, Elliot suggested they go back to the room.  He opened up a bottle of their favorite wine and they sat on the couch with Banksy. Elliot disappeared for a minute into the bedroom and when he came back he got down on one knee and proposed with the most perfect ring. The rest of the weekend was spent celebrating their proposal and Elliot’s birthday with lots of champagne, fancy dinners, shopping, and Banksy.

In 2023 after 3 years in Asheville together, Elliot and Jared decided the best move for the future of Covert would be in Charlotte. After finding the perfect apartment in Uptown, they moved in May and said goodbye to their friends and family in Asheville.

On March 24, 2024, 5 years and 2 days after they started dating, Elliot and Kenzie will be getting married at The Royal American, where they had their first kiss. After a year of long distance, a pandemic, and moving to a new city they have only become closer and couldn’t imagine a life without each other. They cannot wait to see what the future holds for them and can’t wait to do it together.
